Why You Should Do A DNA Test

Many people who are interested in family history only look at the paper trail, but as I learned personally, that can’t always be relied upon. When I decided to do my DNA in 2019, I thought I knew my genealogy on all sides going back to the 1600s. My grandmother never hinted that I was wrong or that there was a secret she was keeping. Sadly, she had passed two years before I did my DNA so I can’t go to her with my questions. My only option to learn these secrets is my DNA.

I’ve spent the last 4 years learning everything I can about using Autosomal DNA to piece my tree back together. DNA matches are like a patchwork quilt. We all come from one main quilt which has been cut up and put into other quilts. Some pieces overlap with others from some tearing and some pieces have no overlap. So, if only a handful of us do our DNA we can’t put the main quilt back together again. We will always have missing pieces. The only solution?

As many descendants as possible (the older generations have more pieces) should do their DNA and put it in all the public databases. Each of these sites has different tools and will help us restore our ancestor’s quilt.

So please consider doing your DNA and asking your family members to do their DNA as well. It will be the only way we can break down the brick wall of the Watsons of Jedburgh and learn where they came from and who they were.
